The race committee meeting tonight was lightly attended, but the conversation was very productive.

The basic premise was determine if we can still do a race that is financially viable, which will attract participants and where we can get a reasonable amount of club support (i.e. volunteers).

No doubt the numbers are sobering, however if we reduce all of our major expenses, then it looks like we can still hold a road race with a minimum of financial risk to the club.  If we register at least 125 participants, which would be consistent with what other road races are seeing this year and our previous numbers, then this should be very doable.

We also need to work out some conflicts with the race.  On the currently proposed dates (July 28th and 29th) conflict with the Tour de Cure and the Spoker ride.  As a drop in participation quickly pushes the event deeply in the red, below if the current proposal:

Syracuse Classic Road Race
  • Sunday August 19th (1 day after the Tour de Loop in Oswego. No other scheduled races on the NYSBRA calendar),
  • Same basic route we've used before with the following differences:
    • Uphill finish on Song Mountain Road (we used to do this many years ago)
      • Slow uphill finish allows timing by OCC
      • Identical loops around the course means no lost pace/wheel cars
      • Route reduces required number of law officers from four to 1 (left turn from Rt 80 to Long road at the very beginning of the race)
  • Entry fees same as 2017: $10 for Jrs, $35 - $40 for all other fields
  • Significant reduction in prize money (similar to Tour de Loop & Hollenbecks), $50 split for 1st, 2nd 3rd.
  • One day event doesn't incur any costs for lodging and USACycling officials.
Please feel free to share your thoughts.

Our next meeting with be June 3rd, 5:00 pm, before the normal OCC board of directors meeting.  In the mean time, Don will break out the costs of doing just the road race so we have that for the next meeting.
