I would like to bring the BoD attention to the West Side Boxing Association. We raised the paltry sum of $300 for them as a donation from sponsors of the 2017 Race Weekend.

I firmly believe that is no other organization at any level in Syracuse/Onondaga County to help kids at risk to stay off the streets and out of harms way.

Please take the time to read the article in today’s Post Standard and hopefully we can find a way to help Ray, 89 year old Ray to keep up his constant fight to help the underprivileged youth in our city.

The OCC has opened it’s pocket to help youth organizations and non is more deserving than this non-profit.

We have been very generous and I hope we can put the WSBA on the list

Rinaldi: More boxing to curb youth violence

It smells like sweat in Ray Rinaldi’s gym.

The swish of gloves and the dull thud of contact fill the air. Every few minutes, a bell rings and a coach shouts orders to his pupils.

“Tank, you’re in the ring.”

To another kid: “You’re with Coach Chris.”

Kids ranging from 6 to 15 years jab at bags or punch with coaches do push-ups on a gym mat. Some wear mesh shorts and T-shirts. Others are in street clothes: jeans and Timberland boots. There are boys and girls.

The workouts are structured and there’s little chatter between the kids. There’s no down time between drills and kids hustle from one exercise to the next.

For Rinaldi, who turns 89 this month, that discipline and structure are key ways to fight youth violence on the street.

“This is my way of getting to these kids because they don’t react to normalcy,” he said. “In three weeks we change attitudes.”

Syracuse has seen a rash of violent crime involving teenagers and pre-teens in recent months. More than 37 kids have been shot or stabbed in the city this year. Leaders are looking for any ways to stop the violence. Just last month, the governor dedicated more state troopers to the city.

Rinaldi believes in getting to kids when they’re young — intervening before they can get involved with a gang or other violent outfit. He plucks them from the streets and puts them in gloves.

He said about 6,200 kids have come through his gym in five years. He targets young people typically considered “unreachable.” Does he save each one? No. But he can help keep a lot of them off the street.

“We’re saving a lot more than anybody else is,” he said.

Rinaldi is now trying to expand his operation, the West Area Athletic and Education Center at 301 S. Geddes St. There’s a vacant building next door he wants to buy. The current owner owes $103,000 in back taxes. Rinaldi wants to buy that lien for $5,000 and take ownership of the building.

He plans to use the building as a youth intervention and education center to support his boxing programs and expand his outreach. Police Chief Frank Fowler stood in support of Rinaldi in the council chambers last month. He said lawmakers should do whatever they can to help Rinaldi.

“One of the toughest things to do in my line of business and Ray’s line of business is calculate the things we prevent,” Fowler said. “We are constantly looking for folks in the community to step up and provide an alternative for our young folks. This gentleman does it here every day, tirelessly.”

Stephanie Pasquale, commissioner of neighborhood and business development, said the site is a suspected brownfield. It previously housed a series of auto garages and a gas station. There could be gas and oil tanks underground. They could be leaking. The property could be toxic.

The city can’t test the property, however, because it’s still privately owned.

Pasquale said the city is working to connect Rinaldi with grants from the state Department of Environmental Conservation in case the site is a brownfield and needs to be decontaminated. State Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli accompanied Rinaldi to the meeting to stand in support.

Nevertheless, the council voted to approve Rinaldi’s purchase of the property.

Good morning everyone,

Regarding the OCC Syracuse Road Race Classic on the 19th, both Colleen and I independently came to the same conclusion this week. With registration sitting at 11 a week before the race, and the BikeReg registration predictor estimating 38 total registrations for the event, we both decided that it was better to cancel the event rather than take a substantial financial loss on it.

No doubt it's disappointing but I'd like to thank everyone for all the work they put in to the race this year.

Of course we still have one big event to go for 2018; two days of CX racing at Longbranch park on Oct 20th and 21st. We'll have details on that going out shortly for that and we'll need help setting up that event.

FYI, last week after being contacted by several local and not so local female racers and based on the long discussions that followed, we've added an option for the Cat 3 women to race either the 33 or 59 mile course. The flyer, bikereg, occ site, etc., have all been updated to reflect that.

The race is been posed to the OCC home page and volunteer registration on bikereg opened last week. I'll have an e-mail to all of the former volunteers tomorrow morning followed by the rest of the club. I'd ask anyone who does a club ride to remind races of the event and that we need them to volunteer. We need about half as many volunteers as we've needed in previous years, so we should be able to put together a full slate of help this year.

If you have never ridden in Central NY you really are missing the best riding in NYS. Lots of roads with very little traffic, all the hills you could ever want and beautiful lakes everyplace. And cheap motels. Great restaurants and prices that are nothing like NYC.

But our race, Syracuse Race Weekend has persevered and grown into a 3 stage omnium that we as a club are proud to present every Summer. We began working on next years race the week after we held the 2017 version.

Next years race will be held July 28/29 and will consist of a crit,TT and RR .It’s great event and we would love to see more of your members traveling up to some of what is the best cycling territory in the Northeast.

Could you please help us to get the word out to your members and hopefully they will come up and enjoy our great roads and fun racing. Our race committee is working on publicity info and preparing brochures flyers and all the info necessary to make for a successful and enjoyable weekend.

The CRCA would be glad to market your event as the Onondaga Cycling Club could do the same for ours. It would be great to have the upstate NY crowd to come down to NYC and race.

Every year for the past 22, we, the Onondaga Cycling Club, has held a race that has in the distant past been well attended by members of your various racing teams. It used to be a Sunday Crit and your members always did well.

Next years race will be held July 28/29 and will consist of a crit,TT and RR .It’s great event and we would love to see more of your members traveling up to some of what is the best cycling territory in the Northeast.

Could you please help us to get the word out to your members and hopefully they will come up and enjoy our great roads and fun racing. Our race committee is working on publicity info and preparing brochures flyers and all the info necessary to make for a successful and enjoyable weekend.

I just printed out some copies of the flyer and I will get them to some shops in Rockland County tomorrow. And since we have changed the date I will contact CRCA to see if they may have any interest. They had a conflict with the poor date

We can hopefully get flyers out to the local shops soon. Any volunteers?

Also we should mention the race on NYSBRA as a news item. I don’t know if I can post on NYSBRA.

70.3 Warm-up ride

A belated thank you to Mike Lyon for organizing our 70.3 warm-up ride and picnic at Jamesville beach on June 2nd. The weather forecast kept our turnout a bit lower than previous years, but it was still a fun time for those who joined us, with many participants walking away with some nice swag in door prizes. Thank you to Mike, and also to Don Butler, chef Roland Pearson, and Tony Baleno for assisting in the day's activities.

Club rides

Our club rides are now in full swing. We truly have a ride for everyone. If you like Tuesday's no-drop rides, then check out the Thursday rides as well. If you have a mountain bike, join Tom and Peg at Great Bear on Monday evenings. That area is a great place to mountain bike, and Tom and Peg know that area so well and will lead you on a fun night off-road. If you have a triathlon/time-trial bike, join the other speedsters on Tuesday nights with Brian clocking your speed on the time trial course. For you racers, check out the 315 Brewery rides on Wednesday nights. Finally, our Wednesday, Friday, and weekend rides always have several different ride distance options. Ride Leaders

We need ride leaders! Please look at the ride calendar and sign up to lead a ride. If you have any questions about being a ride leader, let me know. We are an all-volunteer club, please pitch in to help out. Thank you to everyone who has led a ride so far this year!

Syracuse Race Classic

This year, we are changing up our traditional Syracuse Race Weekend and instead having the Syracuse Race Classic. This will be a one-day road race, to be held on Sunday, August 19th in Tully. More details here: https://onondagacyclingclub.org/syracuse-race-weekend/
We will also need some volunteers to help out with the race, so please plan to help out if you can.

OCC Charity Ride

Mark your calendars for September 15th, when we will have our annual fall century charity ride. This year, Step-up Moment will be the recipient charity. You can learn more about the charity here: http://www.familyfirstfitnessfoundation.org/
This is always a great ride to do when most of us are at the peak of our fitness, with ride distances of 20, 37, 63, and 100 miles. We always have a great picnic after the ride as well, so please join us!

Ok, we’re making some headway The course and date are now on our website It is listed under the heading RaceWeekend which no longer exists This, I would think might get a little confusing

Do we have a flyer printed out? As I stated previously I am traveling downstate and the shops have agreed to post flyers if we provided some I know it sounds old fashion but hard copy advertising really does work Why keep our race a secret when we have such a great event?

When are we going to announce to the club that we have changed the date and the event? Maybe I missed that, I hope so

Do we have a check from the 2017 race for West Side Boxing? For those who don’t know these are kids that Ray Rinaldi has been taking off the inner city streets and they are taught boxing skills They also are provided tutors and his kids have a higher graduation rate than any city high school He is now 88 years old and trains these kids every day It’s as good a cause as any we have So if the club doesn’t want to honor our promise please let me know and I will cover it

The new updates are under OCC Racing. I missed that . What I was looking at was Syracuse Race Weekend which has all the info for last years race.
