Subject: [occ2] Get ready for the 2017 Slow 'n Easy riding Season

To all our Slow‘n Easy riders,

S + L logo.jpg

Slow‘n Easy West rides for the 2017 season will begin April 25,2017.  The snow should be gone by then. The rides will, as usual, leave from the west end parking lot of Reed Webster Park in Camillus located on Warners Rd (Rt 173).  Our rides will start promptly at 6:00 PM.The days are still pretty short and we don’t want to lose any daylight time.

I’m not too sure what the weather will do on our first night, but just be prepared for whatever comes our way.  As usual dress accordingly.

Is everyone ready for the season?  If you have not taken advantage of the winter training facility (WTF)or your own indoor trainer you may want to try a few short rides to get your body back into cycling again.  The more you do,the better it will be.

If you are ready, how about your bike? Is it ready for the season?Have you given it a good checkout yet?  How are the tires...brakes…shifters?If you are not sure, take your bike into your favorite local bike shop and have the pros take a look.  Don’t wait for the day before the season starts to do this because the shops will all be busy with everyone else’s ride. Now is the time to do it.

Speaking of being ready, have you renewed your membership for 2017?  Now is the time to get it done. It’s all on line and simple to use.  Just go to the OCC website and get started: https://onondagacyclingclub.org/ .  Go to the“Shop” button and select“Membership”to get going. You will notice that the registration fee has gone up this year. The Board hated to do it but the cost of our ride insurance has gone through the roof and we could not continue to absorb the cost increases any longer. You’ll note that we have eliminated“Bike Reg” for the on-line payment service and we have begun to utilize “Pay Pal” for the payment service which will eliminate the “Bike Reg”transaction fee that you have been paying.  With the savings from PayPal,the increase in membership fee is not as bad as you might think.Check it out and get signed up.  We’ll be watching for folks who“forget” to renew. Don’t be one of them.

If you are new to cycling, have not ridden in a long time or you just want a shorter more relaxed ride, the S’n E rides are just what you are looking for. These rides are all “no drop” rides so no one gets left behind on the loop.  The pace varies by group, but we’ll have a speed that will work for you.  As far as bikes go,we only require that your bike be safe and road worthy.  Many riders have hybrids and others have road bikes. They are all fine.  You are required to wear a DOT approved bike helmet for these rides. If you don’t have one, you can buy one at your favorite bike shop or sporting goods store.  No helmet…no ride...no exceptions.Riding without a helmet can be very dangerous and a helmet will protect the most fragile part of your body…and I can attest to this.  Also,if you have had your helmet for a long time, you should consider replacing it with a new one.  The inner foam lining breaks down over time and you lose some of its protective value.  Check with you bike shop.

This is the 7th year that OCC has offered the S‘n E west ride series and interest has grown tremendously over the years.  We try to make riding fun for you.If you thought about coming out last year but never got up the nerve to do it, this is the year to do it.  You won’t regret it.  So join us for the new season.  Also,we have added a bunch of no drop easy rides on Saturday mornings at the beginning of the season.  Don Butler will be leading those rides.  Watch for his postings if you want to try them.  For those who prefer to ride on the east side of the county, try out the S‘n E east rides on Thursday evenings.Find info on the website for these rides.

The S‘n E ride is open to all members of the club as well as guests who have an interest in the sport.Guests are encouraged to join with us on a ride and see if they like what we offer.  If they do enjoy the ride, then we invite them to join the club and become a member so that they can take advantage of all the other club rides and activities for the year.  Our insurance only allows us to have guests ride once during the season.Membership applications are available at rides or on line.

So,join us April 25th   for the first S’nE West ride of the 2017 season.

Where: Reed Webster Park,Camillus, NY located on Warners Rd (Rt 173) (parking lot on west end near tennis courts)

When: Ride(s)leaves at 6:00 PM sharp;sign-in starts at ~5:30 PM

Bring: Your bike, an approved helmet, water bottle and a strong desire to ride

Dress: Whatever you are comfortable wearing on a bike… the weather will help dictate this

Mike Lyon and I will be leading the crew for the west side rides once again.  We will have our usual helpers once again:Mark Perrin from The Bikery, Roland Pearson, Tom Hotaling, Al Storing and Dean Connery.

Get ready, it won’t be long!  Let’s hope the weather will be nice.

Ciao,

Tony

PS:The OCC is once again supporting its“buy a bike…get a 2017 membership”promotion with all local bike shops.  If you buy a new bike be sure to ask the shop about this offer. This offers only applies to bikes sold through recognized local bike shops.  Also, the offer is only for people who have not been a member of the club previously…not good for renewals.
