[occ2] Wednesday Ride Report; Van Buren to Cross Lake

21 people rode various routes between 25 and 39 miles last night.  The weather was hot and breezy.

To say the least, it was a strange night.  First, the ride leader left his stack of maps on the printer at work (idiot).  That would have been annoying but still ok because he did manage to find a stack of Victory-Cato maps from a prior ride.  Although the route was different, the same general roads were depicted on the map.  Relief was short lived however because we learned shortly before the ride that B’Ville was having its Memorial Day parade at 6:00 p.m. and getting through the Village would be impossible.  A decision was then made to do the ride in reverse and end by way of B’Ville.  Anyway, after having gotten lost (where was my Victory-Cato the observant reader may ask?  I left it in the car) I returned to the park at about 7:40 with more than half of the riders still missing and was told by the park attendant that she was locking the gate at 8:00 p.m. and anyone not back by that time would be out of luck if they ever wanted to see their car again (or at least till morning).  She seemed blissfully unburdened by the sign that read: “Park closes at dusk”.  Dusk was still an hour away.   Granted, there were other signs that said closing was 7:30 and 8:00 but that is a fact that is surplus to this story.  As riders dribbled back in small groups, she softened her hard line considerably (no doubt impressed by OCC’s reputation and general impressiveness) and she waited patiently as the last riders returned about 8:20.

No mechanicals or mishaps reported.  Special thanks to Mary Jeavons for some great brownies.
