I have have been stopped at least three times from riding the last 2 miles of the current trail because of a concert that was happening later that day. One of these times, the trail was closed at noon, blocked by a police car sitting on the trail a good 1/2 mile before the fence that surrounds the property. This was a Saturday, when there were many people on the trail.
The other thing is that coming from the east, it is more convenient, and less driving, to park at the east end of the current trail, in the State Fair parking lot just off the first 690 exit. But this, too, is closed when there is going to be a concert that evening.
Contrary to the assertion that are just a few concerts, this past season there were 31 concerts this past year (
https://sjhamphitheater.com/past-events-2018/) between 6/2 and 9/14! That's a full month of closings out of the 3.5 months during the summer when most cycling traffic occurs.
The loop the lake trail is supposed to be a draw for tourists, including those traveling through the area on the Erie Canal trail. Clearly, this is not good. In Europe, they would make it easy to bike to the concert and it would be encouraged. What a contrast.
