Message from the NYSBRA President

Making Cycling More Inclusive

NYSBRA’s mission is to grow cycling, specifically where there is great potential for growth, such as with women and juniors. Since our founding fifteen years ago NYSBRA has a proud history of promoting and funding this mission with grants for such things as women’s clinics and junior development. This month I am excited to highlight some recent actions aimed at increasing women’s participation and diversity in our sport.

First, in the Buffalo Bicycling Club’s Message on Women’s Cycling, our friends Steve Mongielo and James Thompson in the BBC are backing women racers with free entry for all BBC events. While two of their three races have already taken place, check out the East Arcade Weekend (Road Race and Crit) on 20-21August!

Also in Buffalo, Tom Weichmann and Rich Scaduto of the East Aurora Racing Club, supported in part by a grant from NYSBRA, is offering greatly reduced entry fees for the fifth year in a row to their Two Days of Buffalo on 6-7Aug.

And third, Elizabeth Tobey, our NYSBRA Women’s Rep, has expanded the historical role of “women’s rep” to include all Women/Trans/Femme/Non-binary Cyclists. See Elizabeth’s article, below, for details. I am thrilled at all of these great steps forward and hope you are, too!

Expanding Representation

We're excited to announce that we are expanding the purview of our Women's Rep board seat to be the Women/Trans/Femme/Non-Binary Rep. The goal of this role is to give organizers, race directors, and officials across New York State a dedicated person that can provide help and guidance to make bike racing more inclusive and expansive of all gender identities. NYSBRA's founding goal is to serve the bike racing community, and this new position helps us better achieve that goal by dedicating time and resources to events across the state - giving the tools to organizers to create safer, more inclusive events and welcome bike racers of all kinds to the start line.

NYSBRA TT State Champions

Beautiful weather and a great turnout greeted riders yet again to rural Tioga Center for “The Race of Truth.” Riders started at minute intervals to give everything they had over their race distance of either 10k, 20k, or 40k. Many riders chose to double up entries or actually double up on racing, doing either 60k or even 80k total for the day! Many of these tough racers first did an Individual TT by race category or age, then turned around and did either an “Eddie Merckx” non-aero race, tandem, or a Team Time Trial (because suffering is so much more fun with friends!) Congratulations to all the new NYSBRA State Time Trial champions and competitors!

NYSBRA Crit State Champions

From the winter snow to the peak summer highs, Grant’s Tomb proved that it’s a season highlight regardless of weather. With nearly 450 unique starters and 14 fields, we had an action packed day of racing, filled with the positive competitive spirit that inspires all of us to roll up at the start line. CRCA is incredibly thankful for all of the club members, teams, staff, and sponsor support that made this race so special.

Rule of the Month

The Difference between a Stage Race and Omnium

Most multi-day events we encounter are stage races, such as the Tour de France, in which the rider must complete each stage in order to continue racing the next stage. What most people don’t know is that stage races can be competed based on the overall lowest elapsed time (like the Tour) or by the highest accumulated points. The applicable rule is:

3H1. A stage race is an event with a common entry, run on consecutive days, comprising a sequence of road races (i.e., individual road races, time trials, criteriums), in which the overall results are determined by cumulative time or points. Riders must successfully complete each stage in order to be eligible for the next one. In stage races by time, the sum of the rider’s times for each stage determines the final results. In stage races by points, the sum of the rider’s points for each stage determines the final results.

If a multi-day event is competed by accumulating points, it is quite often run as an omnium, in which a rider can pick and choose what races the rider wants to compete in. The rider does not have to do all the races, but the rider is at a disadvantage for winning the overall by not earning points in all possible races. While common in track, road omniums are a nice way, for example, for a promoter to provide opportunities to riders who just want to do (or can only do) a subset of the races.

The biggest omnium in our region is the Two Days of Buffalo, which although calling itself a stage race is actually run as an omnium, and the biggest stage race in our region (and the entire US!) is the Green Mountain Stage Race in Vermont.
