Message from the NYSBRA President

Setting a New Record on the Track!

NYSBRA is always looking for new ways to grow our sport and make cycling exciting, such as by sponsoring our state championships and by providing communications such as our website and these newsletters. Back in August, Ben Brown asked me about making an attempt to break the 14-year old “Hour Record” at the Kissena Velodrome. My excitement was immediate, and as the big day approached so did the anticipation throughout the local track community. To build on this historic occasion, NYSBRA now maintains a process and the official NYSBRA Hour Records for the Kissena Velodrome. Read about Ben’s successful attempt, below, and hopefully it inspires more people to get their names in the record book!

NYSBRA President

Ben's Hour Record!

On Sunday, 25Sep, Ben Brown broke the record for longest one-hour ride on the Kissena Velodrome, held since 2008 by Ken Harris. Ben’s epic ride now sets the bar 44.540, upping Ken’s record by 370 meters. This is 27.676 mph! Read all about it and see the photos. Congratulations, Ben!

NYSBRA recognizes the official New York State Hour Records in all NYSBRA Championship Categories and Age Groups. Many records have yet to be set, so if you are inspired by Ben’s ride, give it a try.

Thanks to Andrew Johnson for being NYSBRA’s official, Jason Gallacher for Technical Support, and Matt Vandivort for photos (above) and the great coverage at tobedetemined.cc.

Looking for Volunteers for NYSBRA Board

This is an election year for NYSBRA, so we are once again looking for people interested in giving back to our sport by serving on the NYSBRA board. In short, NYSBRA is looking for volunteers! Terms are for two years and allow people like you to help decide how to best grow competitive cycling in our state. Here is the current NYSBRA board who have been serving you.

If you are interested in any position on the NYSBRA Board, here is a list of recommended qualifications for all positions. A great place to start getting involved is as a Regional Rider Rep! If you are interested, please let me know by email no later than 1Nov.

Salt City CX Crowns New NYSBRA CX Champs!

After a 9 year hiatus, we were excited to return the NYS Cyclocross Championship to the Syracuse region. Over 100 racers from across the state (as well as PA and ON) competed on the legendary Long Branch Park course, which has hosted cyclocross racing for over 35 years. Not even 40+ mph wind gusts could stop the racers from having a day full of fun on a challenging course. Thank you to NYSBRA for granting us the opportunity to host the race; we appreciate your support in keeping bike racing active throughout all of NY!

Keeping Track at Kissena

This has been an exciting Fall for New York track racers. In the Elites, the US National team featured Josh Hartman (Brooklyn) and Geneway Tang (Queens) in the Team Sprint last week at the UCI World Championships in Saint Quentin En Yvelines, France. It has been exciting to watch these riders that grew up at Kissena make it to the big leagues! But New York State representation doesn't stop there! In the Masters, Brittany O'Neal(Brooklyn), James Joseph (Brooklyn), James Lyman (Queens), and Todd Stodolski (Brooklyn) competed at the UCI Masters World Championship last month in Los Angeles. James Joseph earned a podium spot in the Sprint Competition, while Brittany O'Neal rode incredibly strong to win the World Championship in the Points Race!

Congratulations to all!

Rule of the Month

Know who you are racing against!

Riders often make assumptions about placings (and more importantly prizes!), especially when several fields race together on a course. It should be clear when you register on BikeReg but riders (and Race Directors!) still get confused. For example, everyone signing up for the same category in BikeReg should be racing against each other for the same prize list. If there are multiple separate categories on BikeReg starting at the same time (i.e., in the same field), then the placings will be separate for each category unless stated otherwise (i.e., “Field Prizes”). This is common in Junior and Masters fields, where, for example, all Juniors start at the same time but because they registered in individual categories on BikeReg, they will be scored separately based on the category they registered for (e.g., Junior Men 9-10, Junior Women 9-10, Junior Men 11-12, Junior Women 11-12, etc.). If you have any questions, ask the Race Director before the race (not after)!

Note that all riders that start together in any race are allowed to work together. This applies mostly to road racing, where if two categories start on the same whistle then they can all ride together. We don’t worry about it in CX, but if two fields start on different whistles then they cannot work together on the road. Of course, if the riders registered separately as “Cat n” and “Cat n+1” then there should be separate prizes for each category, whereas if they all registered for a “Cat n/n+1” field on BikeReg then there would only be one prize list for everyone.

Finally, if a bunch of categories are scheduled to start at the same time and you think it would make a better race for you and your field if you get a separate whistle, just ask the CR if that is possible! This is especially easy to do in CX. I make changes like this all the time so the riders can have the best possible race and the most fun. So speak up!

ATTN: Bike Race Promoters! Did you know?

Bikereg.com is the Official NYSBRA Event and Race registration partner. When you choose to use their service for your race, a portion of each registration is given back to help fund NYSBRA Grants. These are the grants that help grow the sport of cycling throughout NYS and are provided to Juniors, Local Races, Clinics, Officials and more!

If you love to race, you’ve no doubt spent more time talking about racing than competing. And that’s half the fun.

Pack Chatter can be found on Sound Cloud and through www.ridelcc.com.
