For anyone interested and not subscribed to the Finger Lakes Cycling Club.  We did have several members in the past that did these rides. It was to qualify for the Paris-Brest-Paris ride, which they completed 👍

Subject: [FLCC] Local brevets and an introduction to Randonneuring

Hello:

My name is Jim Bondra and along with Sean Keesler we are putting on 2, possibly 3 rides out of Lansing and Ithaca in April and May. For those of you not familiar with randonneuring and riding brevets, they are rides in which the distance starts at 200k (125) miles. Subsequent distances are 300k, 400, 600k and up. Many of you have ridden centuries. This is the next step up and you do not have to do any fundraising or have expensive fees to ride.

These are not races but timed events, in that each has a maximum allowable time to finish. Overall, you must average 15kph (9.3 mph). The clock is always running. So, for a 200k, the first event we are promoting the time limit is 13:30 hours. You will be given a cue sheet and a ridewithgps link. There are a series of controles or stops where you either get a brevet card signed, get a receipt or answer a question to make sure that you ride the entire course. You are self-supported in that there are no sag wagons, mechanics, etc. so be prepared to go the distance and have a plan if you cannot finish.

There are some safety rules since except for the 200k distance most riders will either start/finish in the dark. You must have at least a front headlight, rear taillight set in non-blinking mode. Also, you will need a reflective vest/sash and reflective ankle bands. If you finish without working front/rear light you will be disqualified.

For a bit more about randonneuring you might want to read this article. https://www.bicycling.com/culture/a38483928/my-first-randonneuring-brevet/  and this one: https://parando.org/info/resources

To participate in rides, you will have to join RUSA. Link is here: https://rusa.org/pages/memberservices

There are regions all over the U.S. and internationally. Our local region is out of Ontario, NY (just east of Rochester). A schedule of rides is here including the 200k and 400k starting locally.

We are promoting a 200k starting from the Lansing Ball Fields on April 20th and a 400k starting by the Cass Park Ice Rink, which goes within wheel touching distance of all 11 Finger Lakes on May 20th starting at 5AM.

You might want to watch the excellent YouTube videos that Sean has shot in the last few years with rides in PA, NY, FL and Canada.

If you have questions, you may contact me at jbondra@PROTECTED or 607-220-4382 before 9 PM. In the meantime, start training and figure out what food/drink works for you and fit of your bike, etc.

Thanks for your time.

Jim Bondra
