SMTC updating Public Participation Plan

The SMTC is currently updating the agency’s Public Participation Plan, which details approaches and procedures the agency will use to engage with the public during the development of transportation plans and studies. You can review the draft plan on our website. Public comments received on or before June 12, 2021, will be considered for the final document, to be presented to the SMTC Policy Committee on June 23. Comments can be submitted via email to mcolone@PROTECTED, or postal mail to: SMTC, Attn: Mario Colone, SMTC, 100 Clinton Square, 126 N. Salina Street, Suite 100, Syracuse, NY 13202.

Manlius Village Center Pedestrian Safety & Mobility Study

Like many communities that developed along a major travel corridor, the Village of Manlius faces the problem of how to safely mesh through traffic with local activity, particularly pedestrian activity, in its central business district. Manlius is somewhat unique in that it has two main streets - Fayette Street (Route 92) and Seneca Street (Route 173) - that serve as the heart of the village. SMTC began work in fall 2020 on the Manlius Village Center Pedestrian Safety & Mobility Study on behalf of the Village of Manlius. As part of this planning-level study the SMTC is reviewing existing traffic conditions to determine potential future traffic improvements, exploring traffic calming and pedestrian and bicycle improvements, and examining the possibility for reducing curb cuts along the two main village streets. Where appropriate, this study will also examine operational issues, such as intersection design and signal operations.  SMTC is holding a virtual meeting in early June to hear specifically from business owners along the two main streets and plans to hold a public meeting in the coming months to hear from all village residents. This study is anticipated to be complete by April 2022.

Dome Traffic Management and Events Strategic Plan

Many changes have taken place in and around University Hill since the Dome was built in 1980, and more changes are expected with the upcoming I-81 Viaduct Project. A new traffic management plan is needed, for SU sports and other special events. The SMTC has contracted with a team of consultants led by Stantec to complete the Dome Traffic Management and Events Strategic Plan. The purpose of this project is to provide detailed, site-specific traffic management and operations plans in a format that can be used by personnel during an event, with consideration for the anticipated changes to I-81. This project started in January 2021 and is expected to take about three years to complete.
