Vuelta a Espana News:
We left at stage 7 with the last write-up.  I said it was a lumpy profile. There is a Cat 2 climb 20 miles from the finish that could take some sprinters out of contention.   It's misleadingly named Alto del 14% . (actually 5.6%

Stage 7:  Hot day today.  more mid 90s for the riders.
22 yo Spaniard Isasa has decided to get some camera time.  He bolted out from the peloton and no one followed.   He had an 8 minute lead after about an hour of racing.  He's been active on long breakaways in earlier stages, so he may have the legs to be out ahead for a long time.

Halfway into the stage the Spaniard still commands a 5:10 lead !

35 miles to go and the peloton has pulled just under 3 minutes behind Isasa.

25 miles to go, the lead is down to 1 minute.  Groves beat vanAert at the intermediate sprint -  vanAert's ugly green jersey lead is now only 11 pts.    Isasa is caught just before the Alto del 14%.  80 miles of solo effort!!
Now the race in the peloton will heat up!  Roglic's Red Bull team goes to front to put the pressure on.  They want to test the race leader O'Conner who had the huge day yesterday.   The peloton is whittled down to about 30 riders with a mile to go to the summit.   Roglic is first over the summit and takes 10 bonus seconds.  Kaden Groves tumbles a the summit!   He touched Quintana's wheel when he looked over his shoulder.  He may not get back on to contest in the sprint.
16 miles to go !   Soler attacks with 12 miles to go.   He opens up a 20 second lead.    The chase is on!    VanAert goes to the front. He may pay the price for this.  Team mate and GC contender bridges up to VanAert.  Soler's lead is 13 at the 6 mile mark.  Slender Sepp goes to the front to pull for vanAert.  They catch Soler with 2 miles to go. A small group goes to the line and vanAert takes it for his 2nd stage victory!

Stage 8  Semi-mountain stage  with a hugely steep finish Cat 3 that was deemed the hardest Cat 3 on earth by Bob Roll and Christian V. It has long ramps 18-20%  (think Stanley or Churchhill)

An 8 man break is established and given about a 4 minute lead.  They hold together up to the start of the first big climb at 37 mile mark.  They cross the summit with a 3:30 lead.  Could the breakaway produce the stage winner ?   Schmid and Tejada pull away on the descent. The breakaway coalesces again and maintains a 2:30 lead w 12 miles to go.  Steady climb to the base of the Cat 3 wall.  Tejada seems to be the strongest of the remaining 3.   2:00 lead with 8 miles to go.  The lead drops to 1:16 at the base of the 5k climb to the finish. The first km averages 17.4% !!    Red jersey is glued to Roglic's wheel.  Roglic dictating the pace.  At one point, O'Connor goes to the front, pulls off and seems to look at Roglic "that all you got?"   At 3km, Tejada and amazingly Lazkano hold a 43 second lead.  Roglic continues to put in a hard pushes and puts  O'Connor in distress.  At around 1km mark Tejada is caught.  Only Enric Mas can stay with Roglic.    Roglic takes the stage!!    The red jersey loses 46 seconds plus Roglic's 10 second time bonus with the win.

Stage 9  Mountain stage -   Queens stage?
If you haven't seen yesterday's stage..  Watch it.  This race is getting even more interesting.
