The showers this morning should fade away and give us about 7 hours for the roads to dry out. Temps will hover around 70 degrees at the start with moderately high humidity. The breeze will be around 9mph out of the WNW.
Vuelta a Espana Notes:
20,000 more ft of climbing than in the TdF!
Stage 1 - 5.4 miles technical TT - included some crazy skinny chicane sections through the streets and buildings of Monaco. Made me think of a Zwift ride. Perhaps Zwift will build a course modeling this one. Somehow Pogacar pulled back the 3 seconds he lost in the first half to take the stage by .09 seconds from Ethan Hayter!
Stage 2 Ethan Hayter put himself into the break and was in the virtual red jersey, but lost too much time on the final incline to hold the red jersey. Wout VanAert softened the peloton with a huge effort with 2km to go on the finishing climb with Pog desparately clinging to his wheel. Both, were absorbed by the sprinter teams. VanAert's team mate, Brennan won the sprint with Pogacar in 3rd!
Stage 3 Flat start with lots of crosswinds progressing upward to a mtn finish. The peloton was busted open with the strong crosswinds - a very stressful section of the route for the riders. As the race progress to higher altitudes clouds formed and eventually heavy rain pounded the riders. As the peloton crested the Cat 1 climb, the rain turned to hailstorm. The roads were covered with an inch of hail. Pogacar was at the head of the peloton and indicated they should stop. Descending in those conditions would have been disasterous. Luckily there was hotel that provided refuge for the soaked peloton. The whole stage was cancelled ! Seems unfair to not give the breakaway riders their time bonuses which were earned before the weather changed.
Stage 4: Only 65 miles - starts immediately with a climb out of Andorra la Vella. 16 miles w approx 4000 ft of vertical gain to an altitude of ~8000ft in the first climb! Luckily the sun is out. This day may determine who is riding strong enough to vie for the top 5 at the end of the Vuelta.
