Today will be a nice respite for those that don't like the hot weather.  Temperatures will be around 74 degrees and the breeze is coming from what I feel is a favorable direction...     7-8mph S-SE.    I've always espoused that SE is the best wind direction (no empirical data to support it, just a feeling).  The breeze is rarely from that direction and when it is quite often that means precipitation. Eight riders set out today to ride the flatlands east of the city - that were once the ocean floor of an inland sea - on the Happy Valley - McConnellsville century and shorter routes ride. Distances were quite varied for such a small group. One intrepid rider rode the full century and was rewarded with a downpour for the final five or so miles. He describes it as “refreshing”. Five of us took on the Lake Como course, although only 2 actually passed Lake Como. Two others missed the turn off from 41 in Scott (the RidewithGPS voice navigation just isn’t loud enough when southerly winds are ripping in your ears), and another had a mutiny from his legs and was tempted to just keep cruising down 41. We had 6 riders meet out @ Erwin Park in Boonville on a perfect summer day for this challenging and beautiful ride. The Black river was running low as we crossed the 1st bridge, also noting an old canal near the river. We followed along the Black river on flat and gently rolling roads until we climbed over a ridge which served up a 15% incline that was followed by a sweeping downhill to the Moose River valley. We rode down a side dirt road to visit Ager Falls, where the attached picture was taken. I am leading the ride tomorrow out of Dwyer Park in Preble. This ride is a hilly affair, but one that rewards with scenic views of Otisco Lake and the rolling countryside around Scott and Lake Como. Please make sure you have plenty of hydration/nutrition, as there appears to be a lack of store options along the route. An item of note: According to Apple Maps, Grout Brook/West Scott Road is closed at the bottom of the Gulf. If true, this means a climb out to go an alternate route. Mother Nature delivered the hot temperatures and light winds as predicted.  Temperatures ranged from 84-87degrees on the course depending on how much shade there was.Five TTers rolled to the start line.  We had a first-timer - welcome Nigel !  Ken T recovered adequately from his weekend rides to smoke the course in an impressive FMT of 26:11 (22.92mph) in the RoadAero category.    Nigel crushed his predicted time estimate by about 2 minutes as he blasted through the course in a time of 27:3 ...Continue Reading
