[occ2] Chain Length

I will be putting a new chain (Sram PC 1051) on a Sram 10 speed and I don't have an old chain to count out the links. From what I've seen on the internet, the method of putting the chain on the small ring & small rear cog, threading it thru the derailleur and them tensioning the chain so it doesn't rub against itself at the rear derailleur seems reasonable.   Does this work well?  Any better suggestions or tricks of the trade?  Bob Ravera ...Continue Reading

[occ2] 2nd old bike

The other is a Canondale, approximately 20 years old. Triple Shimano 105 chainring with 8 in the rear. I had been using it on a trainer in previous years, but not for the past two winters. The chain was rusted solid and, when trying to get that replaced, was reminded that the rear shifter had slowly stopped working, and no longer will shift into lower gears. According to the bike tech, it’s not a readily available item, and replacing it along with the cable would cost at least $150. This was more than I wanted to s ...Continue Reading
